First Quarter

Research labs of Pharmacyclics, a top stock holding of the T. Rowe Price Health Sciences fund, are developing a new cancer drug. The two largest mutual funds specializing in health care — from Vanguard and T. Rowe Price — both have new managers.

Mutual funds have been looking for stocks that can shine even in a slow economy. A French facility of Danone, the food giant, which one fund manager likes for dividend growth potential. Sluggish economic growth seems to be with investors for the long haul. So portfolio managers, noting record corporate profits, are puzzling out ways for shareholders to benefit.
